Two amateur fishermen have been rescued by the RNLI from the sea off Jaywick in Essex after drifting offshore in a homemade boat costing just £9 to build.
The boat was made from loft insulation boards, scrap plywood, laminate flooring and wire coat hangers and had been glued together with silicone adhesive.
“They were found about 200 metres from the beach in their homemade boat,” said Clacton RNLI crewman Joff Strutt.
“Neither of the men had lifejackets on and one of them couldn’t swim.”
The unseaworthy boat was later destroyed with the men’s permission.
