The waters off Muscat, Oman provided challenging sailing conditions for the Extreme 40 fleet in Act 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series™.
Choppy seas and strong winds confounded even the most experienced crews, resulting in an unpredictable leader board at the end of each day’s racing, with The Wave, Muscat skippered by Leigh McMillian (GBR), ultimately seizing the title as champions of Act 2.
Leigh said, “We had a really tough day and SAP were sailing much better than us. They had the measure of us on the start lines and really put the pressure on. It came down to the last race and having been on the back foot all day and not making the most of the situation, we just had to beat them.
Thankfully we managed to sneak away from them at the start. It was touch and go and they were making it difficult for us but we managed to pull it off.”
GAC Pindar’s co-skippers Seve Jarvin (AUS) and Ian Williams’ (GBR) partnership got off to an encouraging start with eight podium finishes and they finished in sixth place leaving them in sixth place in the overall standings with Red Bull Sailing Team and The Wave in first and second respectively.
The fleet now heads to Qingdao, China for Act 3 from 30 April – 3 May where it will be racing at the same site as the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
