Anyone who is planning to go out on the water needs to be prepared for an emergency. It is important to feel confident that if you get into distress there is a robust alert, locate, track and recovery search and rescue process in place. So, to help save more lives at sea McMurdo has launched the world’s first AIS EPIRB to help accelerate search and rescue.
All at Sea has been offered one of the first McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS EPIRBs to roll off the production line at McMurdo’s Portsmouth HQ.
The McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS is the world’s first distress beacon that can support each of the four frequencies used in the search and rescue process: 406MHz and 121.5MHz for beacon transmission, GNSS (better known as GPS) for location positioning and AIS (automatic identification system) for localised connectivity. This multiple-frequency capability will help with faster detection, superior positioning accuracy, greater signal reliability and, ultimately, accelerated rescue of people or vessels in distress.
An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a safety device carried by a vessel to alert search and rescue services and allow them to quickly locate you in the event of an emergency. When activated it transmits a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency which is monitored by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system. The alert is then relayed via an earth station to the nearest Rescue Coordination Centre. With an EPIRB you can summon help wherever you are on the planet, subscription free, no matter how remote.
Rescue times will be reduced by harnessing the global location power and tracking capabilities of 406MHz power and additional tracking capabilities with the localised rescue capacities of AIS, first introduced to the world in McMurdo’s AIS MOB range. Additional features of the McMurdo SmartFind G8 AIS include a 10 year battery, 360 degree strobe, Easy Service Battery and multiple accidental activation prevention features.
The competition prize is for the Manual AIS GPS SmartFind G8 EPIRB and is worth £700. The prize will be shipped to Mainland UK only (up to 30 days after the competition closes).
