This summer sees Bermuda host the 35th America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in international sport.

The beautiful island is famed for many things including pink sandy beaches, Bermuda shorts and, of course, Goslings Rum – the official rum and official ginger beer of the 35th America’s Cup, which starts on 26 May and leads up to the final race on 25 June.

Bermudian’s use Goslings Rum in a number of ways, including roof wetting ceremonies to celebrate a new house being built, but the best way to enjoy the Bermudian rum is in a Dark ‘n Stormy® – affectionately known as the official drink of Bermuda.

The Goslings family first set foot upon the shores of Bermuda in 1806, and since then they have been doing what they do best, making award-winning rums.

Rumour has it the Dark ‘n Stormy was born in the ginger beer factory that was run as a subsidiary of the Royal Officer’s Club. The sailors discovered that a splash of the local Gosling’s Black Seal Rum made ginger beer a lot tastier!

The name apparently originated when an old salt held up his glass, looked through the liquid and noticed that the drink was “the colour of a cloud that only a fool or a dead man would sail under”.  From that day onward the drink was born, and much enjoyed.

Decades later, the drink is still associated with sailing and the sea.

Rum and Ginger Beer are the two ingredients you need to make a Dark ‘n Stormy® right? Well, almost. In fact, the two ingredients you actually need to make a Dark ‘n Stormy, one of the few trademarked drinks, is Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and ginger beer. Now that is a Dark ‘n Stormy! Anything else is a fake ‘n phony.

Making the Dark ‘n Stormy is pretty easy. Available to buy in selected Waitrose stores, all you need is Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, ginger beer (ideally Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer) and a squeeze of lime.

Here is how TO MAKE IT:
Take a Collins glass or a highball and fill with cubed ice. Add 75ml of Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer and add 50ml of Gosling’s Black Seal Rum so that it floats on top of the ginger beer. Add a squeeze of lime if you like and enjoy.
