This month, Dan Snow will present a BBC Radio 4 appeal to raise funds for youth development and outdoor learning charity, Tall Ships Youth Trust.
The TV presenter and historian, Dan Snow, has been a supporter of the charity, ever since he first sailed onboard its previous schooner vessel, Malcolm Miller, in the nineties.
He said: “I was 18 when I sailed with TSYT. I stepped onto that boat a self-absorbed teenager; I stepped off it a mature young adult. It was truly a life-changing experience for me, and it is for more than 1,000 young people that sail with the trust each year, which is why I’m thrilled to be supporting this appeal.”
As the UK’s oldest and largest youth development and sail training charity, TSYT helps to improve the skills and life chances of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, aged 12 to 25, through transformational experiences at sea.
The charity has a fleet of four 72ft Challenger yachts and a 55ft ketch, which operate all year round, providing young people nationwide with a life-changing experience. The opportunity enables them to develop life skills, confidence, and self-esteem, helping to raise their aspirations and supporting them on their journeys into adulthood.
As part of the appeal, Dan Snow will share the story of TSYT young ambassador, Riley (21), who first sailed with the trust last year, he said: “I had a rough childhood and faced adversity growing up. My first voyage with TSYT helped me to understand and process the person I actually wanted to be. I gained so much confidence and stopped judging myself so harshly.”
TSYT’s BBC Radio 4 appeal will air at 07:54 and 21:25 on Sunday 18 June 2023, and again at 15:27 on Thursday 22 June 2023.
TSYT Head of Fundraising and Marketing, Ali Renn, said: “We are thrilled to be featuring on the BBC Radio 4 Appeal this month! This is an incredible opportunity to raise awareness of Tall Ships Youth Trust to a brand-new audience on a national scale. We are so grateful to BBC Radio 4 for airing our appeal, to Dan Snow for presenting it, and especially to our young person Riley for sharing his story in the hope that it will help and inspire others. We do hope you will tune in and support it!”
Funds raised by the appeal will help TSYT to deliver its mission of enabling young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds to change their lives at sea.
TSYT’s appeal page will be live on the BBC Radio 4 website for one week, from Sunday 18 to Saturday 24 June. To find out more and to donate, please visit:https://www.tallships.org/appeal/bbc-radio-4-appeal/
