RNLI crews assist as light aircraft ditches into sea

Volunteer crews from the RNLI were on hand to assist after a light aircraft ditched off the South Wales Coast.

The solo pilot was taken into care of the Coastguard teams as lifeboats from RNLI Porthcawl Lifeboat Station ensured the aircraft was secure and did not become a danger to navigation at sea.

Chris Page, Porthcawl Lifeboat Press Officer said: ‘The RNLI’s volunteer crews never quite know what to expect when the call for help comes, but  we are trained to deal with every eventuality. We were incredibly relieved to arrive on scene to find the pilot was able to be safely recovered. This was a real multi-agency effort between the fire service, police, ambulance service, the Coastguard and the RNLI.’

The RNLI’s key safety advice for anyone visiting the coast or venturing further out to sea is:

  • Whether you’re walking along the coast, out on the sea, or flying a plane, always have a means to call for help in an emergency.
  • If you are out on the water or further offshore, you might not be able to get a signal on your mobile, so more specialist equipment may be needed to ensure that you can alert the authorities and have them come rescue you, should you need it.
