Two students from the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook, Suffolk have earned coveted places in the Athena Under 21 Squad. The selection of Harriet George, Year 13, and Toby Smith, Year 12, comes as a result of their impressive performances during the Waszp National Championship this summer, where both sailors showcased their skill, drive and dedication.
The Athena Under 21 Squad is known for nurturing elite sailing talent, offering them the opportunity to train and compete at a higher level. The duo’s inclusion in the squad places them alongside the nation’s most promising sailors, setting the stage for potential future success on the global stage.
Toby’s sailing journey began when his father took him out on the water for what was initially expected to be a one-time experience. However, it quickly grew into a regular activity, leading Toby to compete at club level before progressing to regional, national and eventually international competitions in countries like Sweden and Portugal.
Toby said: “Looking ahead, my sights are set on the Waszp Worlds in 2025, which will mark my first year with the Athena squad. In the short term, I’m focused on school team racing and working hard to maximise our chances at upcoming events. Being part of the Athena squad has opened up potential opportunities, such as the Youth America’s Cup, while also deepening my understanding of the technical side of sailing—something I’ve always been passionate about.”
Harriet’s sailing journey began with her grandparents introducing her to the sport, continuing a family tradition as both her parents and grandparents were avid sailors. After enjoying several summers on the water, Harriet’s passion for sailing grew, leading her to join winter training squads. She eventually progressed to competing in Lasers before moving into the Waszp class, with her family playing a significant role in shaping her sailing.
Harriet said: “I’m really happy to have received the news, especially after working so hard over the summer to requalify. It feels like a big step forward, bringing me closer to my goal of becoming a professional sailor, whether that’s in the America’s Cup or another team. My main focus this year is to improve as much as I can ahead of the Worlds in Weymouth next year. Looking ahead, I’m excited about exploring different areas of sailing, both onshore and offshore, and gaining experience with sailing teams during my gap year. Each step is getting me closer to that dream.”
Ed Sibson, Director of Sailing at Royal Hospital School, said: “Harriet and Toby’s achievements are a testament to their hard work, resilience and passion for sailing. Their selection for the Athena Under 21 Squad is a remarkable honour, and we look forward to seeing them continue to excel in this exciting next chapter of their sailing journeys.”
