Salcombe Sailor nominated for Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Award

Salcombe Sailor Jayne Morris, whose commitment to community engagement and inclusivity has inspired people of all ages to discover the joys of sailing, has been nominated in the Grassroots Sportswoman of the Year Award at the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Awards 2024.

The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards, in association with Citi, have been celebrating the best of women’s sport for 37 years – from the grassroots inspirations to those at the top of their game winning Olympic gold medals.

Jayne’s journey began at age 10 through a Girl Guides sailing course, sparking a lifelong passion. A pioneering force, she became her university sailing club’s first female Commodore and has spent the last 20 years championing sailing accessibility at Salcombe Yacht Club.

With decades of experience, from national competitions to grassroots coaching, she has been a part-time sailing coordinator for the past 14 years and has pushed for more progressive and social-based sailing to try and open up the sport to newcomers. An active facilitator for the Cadet schemes at SYC, she gives time to individuals to help them find their confidence and she also started the popular ‘Ladies that Launch’ initiative for women who are new or returning to sailing, which was so popular that she launched the parallel ‘Buoys Aloud’ initiative for men.

Helping countless community members over the last 20 years, Jayne’s efforts to break down barriers, encourages everyone – children, adults, and seniors alike – to feel they can be part of the sport.

Public voting is open here. Award winners will be revealed at a ceremony in January 2025.
