Twenty-four sailors braved winter conditions to attend the Griffin25 selection event, gathering before dawn at the Southampton Red Jet terminal.
A sense of anticipation filled the air, fuelled by the limited information provided ahead of the event. Over three days, participants faced a series of challenges designed to test and develop their skills, build camaraderie, and showcase their potential as offshore sailors.
The weekend included team-building exercises, fitness training, boat preparation and on-water sailing. The focus was not solely on identifying the best sailors but on finding individuals with solid sailing experience and the aptitude to grow and excel in offshore racing throughout the season. To maximise time on the water, the new Griffin Sunfast 3600 was joined by three generously loaned yachts: Bellino, Tigris and Diablo. Despite cold conditions, the weather cooperated with dry skies and light breezes, creating a perfect setting for classic Solent winter sailing once the docks were cleared of ice.
“The Griffin25 programme has evolved based on feedback from previous seasons,” commented Griffin Chair Jim Driver. “This year, Hugh Brayshaw joins as a dedicated coach, spending significant time with sailors in the early season. His role is to foster team cohesion and ensure lessons from each race are shared across the squad.”
The programme will support approximately 80 sailors, competing in both the RORC domestic series on the Sunfast 3600 and internationally on the Figaro 3 in the Italian Nastro Rosa circuit and the French Tour Voile. It aims to provide a pathway for sailors transitioning from dinghy racing into offshore sailing, while also supporting those pursuing professional sailing careers.
