Applications sought for 2021 Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships

Applications for entry to the 2021 RYA Eric Twiname Youth and Junior Team Racing Championships are open ahead of the event’s return to Oxford Sailing Club this autumn.

Held at Farmoor Reservoir, Oxford, on 9 – 10 October in conjunction with the Eric Twiname Trust, young sailors will compete in Firefly and RS Feva dinghies for the titles.

The annual two-day event will welcome teams from clubs across the country, as well as junior and youth class associations, RYA regions, schools and individual teams to commence battle in the two separate events.

The 2021 event marks a welcome return for the regatta, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As one of the highlights of the RYA’s youth racing calendar, it is set to be very popular once again, providing the nation’s young sailors with the opportunity to develop their sailing skills and tactics while working as a team.

To promote gender equality in our sport, entries will be prioritised in the following order:

  • Mixed gender teams with helms of more than one gender
  • Teams with more than one gender
  • Single gender teams

The regatta, named after famous sailor, author and journalist Eric Twiname, has seen many members of the current British Sailing Team compete in previous editions such as 470 sailors Eilidh McIntyre, Amy Seabright and Georgina Povall.

Jack Fenwick, keelboat development manager at the RYA, said: “The Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships is a real highlight of the racing calendar, and we are delighted to see it return in 2021.

“Team racing is a really exciting, fun and sociable discipline of sailing combining tactics and teamwork, and it’s great for improving fleet racing skills too. We hope to see lots of young racers applying for entry, especially mixed gender teams, so we can really showcase team racing.”

Teams which have been awarded a place will be notified on September 10, and have until September 16 to accept/make payment. Any spaces not taken will be offered to those on the waiting list who will be contacted on September 17.

All paperwork for each entry must then be completed by October 1 at the latest.

Full details of entry are listed in the Notice of Race.
