Marine conservation charity GreenSeas Trust has announce three bilingual BinsForGreenSeas have been installed on Pearl Island in Qatar to reduce litter and stop plastics from entering the sea.
Located off the coast of Doha, Pearl Island is a popular tourist destination boasting sophistication and luxury. The GreenSeas Trust bins have been positioned at key waterfront locations in the island’s marina, an area popular with tourists and the yachting community. The bins will support marine conservation in Qatar and encourage local communities and tourists to reduce litter and preserve natural habitats on the coastline.
Marine pollution is a major issue in Qatar. A study from the Qatar Journal of Public Health found that marine litter in the Arabian/Persian Gulf was higher than the global average, specifically the abundance of plastic waste. The new bins will help to tackle the growing threat of plastic pollution, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment for residents and visitors.
“This is our first installation in Qatar,” said Fazilette Khan, MNM, CEnv, and the Founder Trustee of GreenSeas Trust. “It’s great to see a global commitment to marine conservation, and the introduction of the BinForGreenSeas is a vital part of that effort.”
She added, “We have prevented almost one million plastic bottles entering the sea and our bins make it easier for everyone to responsibly dispose of litter and play their part in reducing plastic pollution.”
