Boaters urged to support HVO Campaign for #GreenerBoatingDiesel

The Cruising Association (CA), alongside key partners, is calling on the UK’s recreational boaters to back its campaign to make Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) more accessible and affordable.

HVO is a cleaner, greener solution for diesel engines

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) offers a cleaner, greener solution for diesel-powered recreational boats, providing a significant reduction in CO2 emissions without compromising safety or performance.

HVO is approved by virtually all marine engine manufacturers, and can be used without engine modifications, making it a straightforward switch. Unlike traditional mineral diesel containing FAME, HVO is stable, clean-burning, and reduces the risk of issues like diesel bug, making it an ideal drop-in replacement.

While HVO is increasingly available for inland vessels, seagoing recreational boats in the UK are excluded from government incentives under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), which supports its use in other sectors. This exclusion has made HVO expensive and inaccessible for the seagoing recreational boating community.

Support our HVO Campaign

To tackle the challenges of limited availability, inconsistent pricing and a lack of UK Government support, the Cruising Association (CA), in collaboration with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), British Marine (BM), and the Inland Waterways Association (IWA), has launched a campaign to increase awareness and drive the adoption of HVO.

We need your support to help increase demand, expand supply and stabilise the price of HVO, to make cleaner fuel a viable choice for the recreational boating community.

“HVO offers a practical and immediate way for all recreational boaters to reduce their carbon emissions and use a more sustainable fuel for cruising, without modifying their existing diesel engines. By supporting our campaign, we can push for changes that make HVO more accessible and affordable, helping the UK’s boating community take a big step toward sustainability.” Robin Baron, President of the Cruising Association

Your voice matters, take action now

With the UK Government currently reviewing its Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), the CA urges the cruising community to take action before the consultation and ‘Call for Evidence’ closes on 27 January 2025. This is a vital opportunity to make our voices heard.

Find out how to ‘Have Your Say’ and respond to the UK Government’s ‘Call for Evidence’ by visiting our HVO Information and Campaign page.
