Meros Yachtsharing welcomes CO2-neutral fuels to power their new 95 yacht.
Meros, along with Sunseeker International and Rolls Royce, has been extremely proactive in sourcing alternative and environmentally friendly types of propulsion.
Meros has received approval for its new 95 yacht to use synthetic fuels in accordance with EN 15940. The introduction of the new fuel standard paves the way for the use of low-CO2 or CO2-neutral fuels.
The synthetic fuel, supplied by Repsol, will be delivered for the first time to one of Mallorca’s most famous Ports, Puerto Portals, and will be used for the first known Sunseeker of this size and class – the Meros Signature 95 – marking a momentous occasion for Meros Yachtsharing and for all those involved.
The Sunseeker Meros Signature 95 is equipped with the latest version of the Rolls Royce mtu 2000 series engines for yachts, the V-12 2000 M96X, that are suitable for low-CO2 or CO2-neutral synthetic fuels, such as, in this case, with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel according to ISO EN 15940.
Meros has not only developed a revolutionary sharing programme for Sunseeker yachts but has also placed consistent priority on the company’s journey to be more sustainable.
Since 2019, Meros has been exploring hybrid propulsion, which will, in the eventuality of tougher restrictions regarding CO2-emission, secure Meros yachts’ entry into eco-sensitive marinas and zero-emission zones in the future.
The Sunseeker Meros Sunseeker 95 will start the first field trials now with her maiden e-fuel voyage to the Monaco Grand Prix later this week, where she will host guests trackside during this most prestigious Grand Prix.
The choice of Monaco as the destination for the maiden voyage is not by chance. The Principality of Monaco is known worldwide for its luxury and glamorous image but also for its relentless pursuit of sustainability and environmental protection.
Further sustainable fuel initiatives from Meros
Furthermore, Meros is working on solutions to be able to stock synthetic and fossil fuels separately to enable zone-dependent fuel selection and will evaluate the simultaneous operation of Simufuel® as part of the field trials to be prepared for initial availability and supply.
Independently of this, Meros is in the process of implementing another idea to reduce CO2 emissions. With its NETYACHTS® programme, Co-Owners will have the opportunity to redeem their weeks of use on other Sunseeker yachts in the Meros fleet around the Mediterranean in the future. This offers them the opportunity to explore distant sea areas without having to make fuel-intensive and CO2-emitting yacht transfers. This concept has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by thousands of tonnes in the future.
Meros founder and managing director, Martin Huber, explains: “We are building on partners who are very innovative themselves and who are actively working on sustainability issues in order to make their contribution to achieving the climate goals we have set. This was a key point for us why we chose Sunseeker yachts and mtu engines from Rolls-Royce for our fleet expansion plans at Meros.”
