HULL FISHING COMPANY SUPPORTS SEA CADETS FOR FOURTH YEAR

North Atlantic Fishing Company continues its commitment to inspiring the next generation of mariners with sponsorship of the Hull Sea Cadets’ annual camping and sailing trip to Welton Water for the fourth consecutive year.

The event saw 27 Sea Cadets, aged 11 to 17, hone their sailing and camping skills in the picturesque setting along the Humber River.

The five-day programme at Welton Water offers diverse activities designed to challenge and inspire young cadets, with participants having the opportunity to develop skills in sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, rowing, power boating and kayaking. The activities not only provide enjoyment but also help cadets accumulate valuable water hours, contributing to their waterborne qualifications and bolstering future careers in the maritime industry.

Sally Green, Commanding Officer of the Hull Sea Cadets, said: “It’s been fantastic – without North Atlantic sponsoring, we couldn’t have 27 cadets here doing what they’re doing and enjoying it. The trip allows some of our Cadets to access things they wouldn’t usually have the opportunity to. It’s really important to have this kind of interest for the future generations of the industry. Getting the Cadets on the water is what it’s all about, learning new skills and watching them grow and thrive.”

Lydia Moynihan, a 16-year-old Senior Cadet, added: “This is my fourth year at the Welton Water summer camp and every year it’s a fantastic experience. I think activities like this are great for young people as they build resilience, help make friends, and can be put on your CV. It can lead to careers in similar fields if you enjoy it enough.”

North Atlantic, which has its home port in Hull and operates a fleet of British registered fishing vessels, is passionate about investing in the local community and building interest in maritime careers. The firm also sponsored the Tall Ships Youth Trust sailing challenge in August, which enabled a group of cadets to sail around the UK on a week-long adventure.

Phil Haslam, Managing Director at North Atlantic Fishing Company, stated: “We are very proud to support the Hull Sea Cadets and the wider local community, and this annual trip is a fantastic way to cap off their summer. Providing experiences to inspire the next generation of maritime professionals in the Humber region is crucial, especially given its rich maritime heritage. It will also help ensure a robust workforce is in place for the future. As global populations increase, fish will play an even more significant part in sustainably feeding the world.”
