An Essex student has become the first apprentice in the UK to complete a new course aimed to providing a new route into the marine sector for young people.
Oran Jones from Fambridge Yacht Haven completed the Marina & Boatyard Operative Apprenticeship scheme, becoming the first student to successfully complete the course with Paragon Skills.
Oran joined the Essex marina several years ago, combining on-the-job training with online, remote study. Assessors visited quarterly to assess Oran’s skills and development, with an independent assessor evaluating his final tests.
Oran’s personal Tutor from Paragon Skills, Fabio Scimeca, congratulated Oran on the successful completion of his course saying, “The progress Oran made during his apprenticeship was amazing, seeing Oran grow through the programme learning all important skills and knowledge to help him come a confident Operative for Fambridge Yacht Haven.”
Marina Manager Danyal went further emphasising Oran’s contribution to the marina and the team saying, “He has grown in his role, both in knowledge and confidence. He has become a real asset to the marina, a skilled rigger and a firm favourite with customers and staff alike due to his good nature and intellect.”
On completion of his course, Oran is now a qualified Marina & Boatyard Operative and a full time Operative for Fambridge Yacht Haven.
Commenting on the scheme, Danyal said, “We’ve witnessed first-hand the value of this apprenticeship programme, both to us as employers as well as to the individual. As a result, we’ve employed a new apprentice on the same scheme with Oran taking a lead role to help him through the role and the course content.”
