World Sailing has welcomed the announcement from the International Olympic Committee on athlete quotas and the event programme for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Quanhai Li, World Sailing President, said: “We thank the International Olympic Committee for today’s decision, and we recognise the task they have faced in accommodating the aspirations of 36 sports for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“We look forward to working with the IOC, LA28, our athletes and our national federations on the detailed planning of a great competition as we fulfil the ambitions in our Olympic Vision, ensuring our sport continues to evolve to meet our commitments on marketability, accessibility, diversity and sustainability.”
David Graham, World Sailing CEO, said: “Today’s decision is the outcome of the collaborative relationship we have built with our colleagues at the IOC and LA28, and I’m pleased to say we are taking the same constructive approach with colleagues at Brisbane 2032.
“There is work to do to ensure our sport continues to strengthen its contribution to the Olympic Movement but, with the global sailing community’s ongoing support for the pathway outlined in our Olympic Vision, I know we can look forward to fantastic sailing in Los Angeles.”
The numbers are unchanged from the Paris Games which saw 330 sailors (165 men and 165 women) competing across 10 events: four men’s, four women’s and two mixed-gender categories.
